Interim Health Care

The Interim health care released the results of a statistical study that estimates the number of circumcised women and girls at risk of FGM live in our country. Measures to improve the situation of these women are under development.
6260 circumcised women in Belgium :

this study shows that an estimated 22,840, the number of women and girls from countries where FGM is practiced. Of these 22,840, 6260 are most likely circumcised and 1975 may be (as at 1 January 2008).
The Flemish Region (3550 girls and women already circumcised or risk) is most affected by this problem, followed by the Brussels-Capital (3037) and the Walloon Region (1648).
More specifically, the number of women giving birth probably excised in Belgium is rising: it has increased threefold over the last ten years. During childbirth, these circumcised women may experience complications that vary with the type of mutilation suffered.
Needs for prevention and medico-social

This study was conducted by the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp and with the support of a committee (the “International Centre for Reproductive Health”, Scientific Institute of Public Health, Office Birth and Childhood, “Kind & Gazing, the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless Persons, Feasible).
It is the second such study. This study presents all the current statistics on the subject and shows that prevention needs (at-risk girls to be circumcised) and medico-social (women already circumcised) are important in Belgium.
